What Is Gemini Embedding 2?

Google has unveiled Gemini Embedding 2, its first natively multimodal embedding model — a landmark release that represents a fundamental shift in how AI systems understand and retrieve information across different data types. Unlike older embedding models that were purpose-built for a single modality (a text model here, an image model there), Gemini Embedding 2 processes text, images, audio, video, and PDF documents through a single unified architecture and maps them all into one shared vector space.

That may sound like a technical detail, but the implications are enormous. When a query and its potential answers all live in the same vector space — regardless of whether they are words on a page or frames in a video — retrieval becomes dramatically more powerful, simpler to build, and easier to scale.

Why Natively Multimodal Matters

The word natively is doing a lot of work in Google's announcement. Previous approaches to multi-modal retrieval typically relied on separate specialist models — one to embed text, another for images, a third for audio — whose outputs were then awkwardly aligned after the fact with techniques like contrastive learning or late fusion. The alignment was never perfect, and every additional modality added latency, infrastructure cost, and a new source of error.

Gemini Embedding 2 discards that patchwork approach entirely. Because it was trained end-to-end on mixed multimodal data from the outset, the model intrinsically understands relationships between modalities. A diagram in a technical PDF is understood to be semantically related to the surrounding text that describes it. A spoken sentence in a podcast is understood to relate to the transcript and the topic tags. A product photo lives near its written description — not because a fusion layer stitched them together, but because the model learned that relationship during training.

This architectural difference translates directly to better retrieval accuracy, particularly for cross-modal queries: searches where the question is expressed in one modality and the answer might live in another.
