Project Hail Mary VR Game Announced | Journey Among the Stars Is a Canon Expansion

Amazon MGM and Maze Theory reveal a mixed-reality VR experience with an original Andy Weir story, built for Meta Quest 3 and Pico headsets

📖 7 min read

Following the massive $429 million global success of Project Hail Mary, Amazon MGM Studios and Maze Theory have officially announced Project Hail Mary: Journey Among the Stars, a canonical VR expansion of the film's story built for Meta Quest 3 and Pico headsets. Author Andy Weir is writing a completely original story for the experience. This is not a retelling of the movie. It is a new chapter set during the mission to Tau Ceti.

The Developers | Maze Theory, Masters of Immersive IP

Maze Theory is handling development in close collaboration with Amazon MGM Studios and Weir. The London-based studio built its reputation on licensed VR adaptations including Peaky Blinders: The King's Ransom and Doctor Who: The Edge of Time, both praised for translating screen IP into spatial experiences without reducing them to passive viewing.

Unlike a standard port, the game is being built as a Mixed Reality (MR) first experience. Your actual physical room will bleed into the Hail Mary spacecraft. You are not just looking at the ship through a headset. Your living room walls become the bulkheads of the lab where Ryland Grace performs his experiments. Maze Theory confirmed the game leverages Meta Quest 3's full-color passthrough cameras and depth sensors to map real furniture into in-game objects.

Plot Alignment | A Pivotal, Untold Moment of the Mission

The game takes place during a "pivotal, untold moment" of the Hail Mary mission. While the movie and book fast-forward through certain stretches of the journey to Tau Ceti, the VR experience focuses on a specific engineering crisis that occurs while Grace and Rocky are working together aboard the ship.

The Mid-Mission Crisis

In the film, we see Grace (Ryan Gosling) and Rocky, the five-legged Eridian engineer, successfully breeding Taumoeba, the microbes that eat the Sun-killing Astrophage. The game explores a lost chapter where the ship's life support and xenonite containers fail simultaneously, forcing the player into a high-stakes repair sequence.

  • The Rocky Partnership. Unlike the film, where you watch their friendship grow from a theater seat, the VR game requires you to manually communicate with Rocky. You must use a translation device and hand gestures, the "jazz hands" from the book that were shortened in the movie, to coordinate repairs in real time.
  • Scientific Problem-Solving. The gameplay mirrors the hard sci-fi appeal of the film. Players perform actual experiments, measuring light refraction and calculating fuel ratios, to save the ship from a spin-out disaster mentioned briefly in the film's second act.

Major Spoilers | How the Game Ties to the Film's Ending

Because the game is canon, it includes deep-tissue links to the film's emotional climax.

The Cowardice Reveal

A major twist in the movie is that Ryland Grace did not volunteer for the mission. He was forced into it by Eva Stratt (Sandra Hüller) because he was a coward who refused to die for Earth. The VR game leans into this psychological element. Players experience "memory flashes," playable flashbacks that reveal more of the intense final hours at the Project Hail Mary facility before Grace was drugged and put into a coma.

The Eridian Connection

The game's ending reportedly hints at the film's final scene: Grace living on Rocky's home planet, 40 Eridani A. While you play as "Mission Grace," the game features narration from "Professor Grace," the older version seen teaching Eridian children at the end of the movie. Successfully completing the VR mission provides a narrative bridge explaining how Rocky and Grace survived the Taumoeba leak that nearly destroyed their fuel supply before they parted ways.

Release Window and Market Context | Late 2026

Project Hail Mary: Journey Among the Stars is slated for release in late 2026, timed to capitalize on the film's likely awards-season campaign and the growing consumer appetite for premium single-player VR experiences. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie's $371 million opening and Hail Mary's $429 million run have demonstrated that audiences are willing to pay premium prices for immersive entertainment, whether that means IMAX screenings or spatial computing.

The video games industry has seen a surge in IP-driven VR titles through 2025 and 2026, with franchises like Nintendo and Fortnite expanding into adjacent media formats. Maze Theory's approach, building a canonical story rather than a promotional tie-in, positions Journey Among the Stars as a product with genuine narrative value rather than a marketing exercise.
