OpenAI has updated its ChatGPT app for iPhone to include a dedicated CarPlay experience, making it the first major AI assistant to arrive on Apple's in-car platform following the release of iOS 26.4 on March 24. [1] The update, available on the App Store as of Monday, allows drivers to interact with ChatGPT entirely through voice from their vehicle's dashboard. Google's Gemini and Anthropic's Claude have not announced comparable updates yet.

iOS 26.4 Opens CarPlay to Voice-Based AI Apps for the First Time

Apple introduced a new app category called “voice-based conversational apps” to CarPlay with the release of iOS 26.4 on March 24. [2] The category is explicitly designed for AI chatbots and sets strict requirements: apps must launch into a voice-first interface, minimize visual output, and “optimize for voice interaction in the driving environment,” according to Apple's developer documentation. [3]

The change marked the first time Apple formally opened CarPlay to third-party AI assistants. Prior to iOS 26.4, no dedicated chat AI had a native CarPlay presence. OpenAI was the fastest to respond, shipping its CarPlay-compatible build within days of the iOS release. Google and Anthropic have not confirmed timelines for their own integrations.

ChatGPT's CarPlay Interface | 2 Controls, No On-Screen Text

The CarPlay version of ChatGPT is stripped down to comply with Apple's distraction-reduction guidelines. According to 9to5Mac, the interface displays only two controls: an “End” button and a mute/unmute toggle. [1] There is no visible text, no image output, and no on-screen chat transcript.

Drivers interact with ChatGPT through voice, the same underlying model as the iPhone's advanced voice mode. Responses are spoken aloud by the app. Apple explicitly states in its developer guide that voice-based conversational apps “must have a primary modality of voice upon launch.” [3]

No Wake Word | Siri Keeps Its Default Car Button Privilege

Despite its presence on the CarPlay home screen, ChatGPT cannot be summoned with a wake phrase. Drivers must manually tap the ChatGPT app icon before beginning a conversation. [1] That friction matters in practice: Siri remains the only assistant accessible through a car's physical steering-wheel voice button or factory microphone trigger.

Apple has not changed how hardware voice triggers are routed. The built-in button activates Siri regardless of which third-party apps are installed. OpenAI has no announced plans for a CarPlay wake word, and Apple's guidelines do not currently provide a pathway to replace Siri's hardware priority.

The limitation mirrors the situation on iPhone, where “Hey Siri” cannot be reassigned to ChatGPT. Apple's partnership with OpenAI, announced at WWDC 2025, allows Siri to hand off certain queries to ChatGPT, [4] but does not extend to hardware-level wake-word access. See our Apple coverage hub for the full timeline of that integration.

Gemini and Claude Have No CarPlay Release Date

Google and Anthropic have not announced CarPlay apps following the iOS 26.4 change. [2] Both companies have the technical frameworks to build voice-first CarPlay experiences. Google's Gemini already supports advanced voice mode on Android and iOS. Anthropic's Claude has a dedicated iPhone app with voice input.

The delay likely reflects development and review timelines rather than strategic hesitation. Apple's App Review process typically takes one to three days, but building a CarPlay-compliant voice interface from scratch requires stripping out text-rendering and on-screen response features. OpenAI's speed to market suggests the company had been preparing the CarPlay build ahead of the iOS 26.4 release.

Apple's Siri Chatbot Upgrade Slips to iOS 27

Apple is working on a broader redesign of Siri with conversational, chatbot-like functionality intended to directly compete with ChatGPT and Gemini. Those features were originally targeted for iOS 26.4 but have slipped to iOS 27, expected in fall 2026, according to multiple reports. [5]

The delay creates a window for ChatGPT to establish itself as the preferred in-car AI before Apple deploys its own upgraded assistant. Apple's decision to open CarPlay to voice-based AI apps while Siri's chatbot upgrade slips signals it is prioritizing ecosystem openness in the short term, likely to avoid regulatory scrutiny over bundling its own AI while Siri remains functionally behind competitors.
