What Is Natural Selection

Natural Selection is a freeride competition originally created by snowboarder Travis Rice for snowboarding, then expanded to include skiing. The format drops athletes into real mountain terrain, no groomed runs, no gates, no predefined course, and asks them to ski the best line they can find. Athletes are judged on line choice, difficulty, fluidity, control, and style.

The ski edition runs as a head-to-head bracket: two skiers ride simultaneously on parallel sections of the same face, and judges pick the better run. The loser is eliminated. This continues until one rider remains. The terrain is typically Alaskan backcountry accessed by helicopter, featuring cliffs, spines, chutes, and variable snow conditions that change throughout the event window.

Alaska 2026 | April 14 Window

The April 14, 2026 date is a target within a weather-dependent event window. Natural Selection events in Alaska are called on the day conditions align: sufficient snowpack, acceptable avalanche risk, and visibility for filming. If conditions are not met, the event slides to the next viable day. Past editions have waited up to two weeks for the right window.

The Alaskan venue has not been publicly named, consistent with the event's tradition of keeping exact locations close-hold until the competition day. The field is invite-only, typically 8-12 elite freeride skiers selected by the Natural Selection organizers and Red Bull.

Why Natural Selection Stands Apart

Most ski competitions are held on groomed courses with measured gates and standardized conditions. Natural Selection throws all of that out. The mountain is the course, and every rider sees different conditions depending on when they drop and what line they choose. A ridge that holds perfect snow for the first rider may be windblown and icy for the second. That variability, combined with genuinely consequential terrain where falls can mean injury, makes Natural Selection the most credible freeride event in competitive skiing.
