ASML Overview | The Only Maker of EUV Lithography Machines
ASML is a Dutch multinational corporation that holds a global monopoly on the most critical piece of equipment in the chipmaking process: the EUV (Extreme Ultraviolet) lithography machine. Without ASML, the world literally cannot produce chips smaller than 7 nanometers. Every advanced chip manufactured by TSMC , Samsung, or Intel at 5nm and below requires an ASML EUV system to pattern the transistor circuits onto silicon wafers.
Founded in 1984 as a joint venture between Philips and ASMI in Veldhoven, Netherlands, ASML spent decades developing EUV technology that most of the industry considered physically impossible. The machines use 13.5-nanometer wavelength light generated by firing a high-powered laser at molten tin droplets 50,000 times per second, creating plasma that emits EUV radiation. Each system contains over 100,000 components, weighs approximately 150 metric tons, and costs between $200 million and $400 million depending on the generation.
ASML Products | EUV, High-NA EUV, Metrology Systems
EUV Lithography Systems. ASML's core product line consists of the NXE and EXE series lithography systems. These machines "print" circuit patterns onto silicon wafers at resolutions no other technology can achieve. The NXE:3800E is the current workhorse of the semiconductor industry, deployed across TSMC, Samsung, and Intel fabs worldwide.
High-NA EUV. The newest generation of ASML machines, the EXE:5000 series, uses a higher numerical aperture (0.55 NA versus 0.33 NA in current systems) to achieve the resolution needed for sub-2nm mass production. High-NA EUV systems began shipping in volume in late 2025 and are required for the 2nm and 1.4nm process nodes that TSMC and Intel plan to ramp in 2027 and 2028. Each High-NA system costs roughly $380 million.
Metrology and Inspection. Beyond lithography hardware, ASML provides computational lithography software and yield management tools. These systems help fabs optimize patterning accuracy and maximize the number of working chips per wafer, a metric called yield that directly determines profitability.
ASML Q1 2026 Performance | Revenue Beat, Guidance Raised
ASML reported €8.8 billion in net sales for Q1 2026 with a gross margin of 53%, beating analyst expectations. The company raised its full-year 2026 revenue target to €36 billion to €40 billion, driven by accelerating orders from customers in the United States and South Korea. The guidance increase reflects surging AI chip demand that is forcing foundries to expand capacity faster than planned.
Geopolitical Shift. The geographic breakdown of Q1 2026 revenue tells a significant story. South Korea jumped to 45% of total sales, while China plummeted to 19% due to strict 2026 export controls on both DUV and EUV tools. The United States and European allies have tightened restrictions on semiconductor equipment sales to China throughout 2025 and 2026, directly impacting ASML's ability to service existing Chinese customers or sell new systems. CEO Christophe Fouquet acknowledged the revenue impact but noted that orders from allied nations have more than compensated.
ASML and TSMC | The Relationship That Powers Global AI
To understand the 2026 semiconductor market, you have to view ASML and TSMC as a single machine. ASML builds the tools. TSMC uses those tools to build the world's intelligence. The record profits reported by both companies in April 2026 are the direct result of Nvidia and Apple placing massive orders for 3nm and 2nm chips at TSMC, which in turn forced TSMC to purchase more High-NA EUV machines from ASML.
As long as agentic AI requires more computing power, these two companies remain the most essential infrastructure on the planet. No nation, company, or technology can bypass this supply chain. Every AI model, every autonomous vehicle, every data center expansion depends on ASML machines printing circuits at TSMC fabs.
