More than 4,000 Kaiser Permanente pharmacy workers, lab technicians, and support staff across Southern and Central California ratified a new four-year contract on Friday, ending a labor dispute that included a three-day strike earlier this year. The agreement was announced by United Food and Commercial Workers local unions.
Wages and Contract Term
The contract includes 21.5 percent in across-the-board wage increases over its four-year life, with additional market adjustments bringing total gains to between 25 and 30 percent for many members. The contract runs through March 2030. Workers voted to ratify by an 87 percent margin.
AI Protections | What the Language Covers
The contract requires Kaiser to give the union advance notice before deploying any new AI or automated technology that could affect job duties, staffing levels, or workload distribution. A joint labor-management committee will review proposed AI deployments before they go live, with formal consultation rights for the union. Workers displaced or substantially affected by an AI system are entitled to retraining and reassignment priority.
Labor attorneys familiar with healthcare contracts said the language is more specific than most AI clauses negotiated to date, which have typically been limited to notice requirements. Kaiser Permanente confirmed the ratification but did not comment on the AI provisions specifically.
Strike Context and What Comes Next
The three-day strike in January involved roughly 2,800 workers at Kaiser facilities across Los Angeles, Orange, San Bernardino, Riverside, Ventura, and Fresno counties. The work stoppage was driven by both the wage gap and Kaiser's initial refusal to include binding AI consultation language.
Kaiser and the UFCW locals have 60 days to seat the joint AI review committee. The first reviews are expected to cover Kaiser's planned expansion of robotic pharmacy dispensing at three additional Southern California facilities. UFCW has said it intends to use the contract as a template in upcoming negotiations with Albertsons, Kroger, and several regional hospital systems later in 2026.
