Overview
ARK Raiders is a free-to-play co-op extraction shooter developed by Kömmling Interactive and published by Nexon. The game places squads of up to three players inside massive open zones on a devastated future Earth, tasking them with raiding AI-controlled facilities called ARKs, scavenging high-value technology, and extracting before rival squads or the environment ends their run. Story and Setting
ARK Raiders is set in the year 2087, several decades after a catastrophic event known as "The Descent" — a cascading failure of the global automated infrastructure network that was intended to sustain post-scarcity civilization. What was meant to be the apex of human technological achievement collapsed under the weight of an AI alignment failure, triggering resource wars that left most of Earth's surface uninhabitable.
The ARKs are the remnants of that failed future: autonomous, self-maintaining technological vaults built before The Descent to preserve humanity's most advanced engineering and medical breakthroughs. Now guarded by hostile machine intelligences that have interpreted their "protect the contents" directive in increasingly lethal ways, the ARKs represent both enormous opportunity and enormous danger.
Players take on the role of Raiders — scavengers, mercenaries, and survivors who have formed loose factions based on ideology and survival strategy. Some factions want the ARK technology for reconstruction. Others want to sell it. Others want to destroy it. The faction system gives players narrative context for the PvP encounters: when two squads clash inside an ARK zone, they are not random enemies — they are competing visions for what the world becomes next.
The game's seasonal story updates expand the lore through in-world documents, NPC transmissions, and environmental storytelling embedded in the ARK zones themselves, rewarding players who explore methodically rather than rushing the extraction point.
Gameplay
A standard ARK Raiders session begins in the Basecamp — a persistent, customizable hub where players manage their inventory, craft equipment, accept contracts from faction representatives, and form squads. From Basecamp, squads deploy into one of several ARK Zones: large open maps ranging from 2 to 4 km² featuring varied biomes including collapsed urban environments, flooded industrial complexes, overgrown research campuses, and desert wastelands.
Inside a zone, squads face a tiered enemy hierarchy of machine guardians ranging from fast, fragile scout drones to heavily armored Sentinel-class constructs that function as mini-bosses. The largest ARK structures in each zone are guarded by Apex Machines — unique, named enemies with distinct behavior patterns and phase-based combat that require coordinated squad tactics to defeat. Killing an Apex Machine unlocks the deepest ARK vault in its zone, containing the highest-tier loot in the run.
Combat is third-person with a cover system, a dodge mechanic with directional i-frames, and a squad ability layer that rewards coordinated play — one player can mark enemy weak points, another can deploy area-denial turrets, while a third manages suppression fire. The game strongly incentivizes squad role diversity through loadout synergy bonuses that activate when teammates equip complementary gear sets.
