The Super Mario Galaxy Movie opens in US theaters on Wednesday, April 1, following its world premiere last Saturday at the historic Minamiza Theater in Kyoto, Japan. The film brings back the star-studded voice cast from the original 2023 Super Mario Bros. Movie, including Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Jack Black as Bowser, Brie Larson, Charlie Day, Keegan-Michael Key, Benny Safdie, and Donald Glover, whose role has been kept under wraps heading into release.

The Kyoto Debut | Galaxy Carpet and Nintendo's Home Premiere

Nintendo chose Kyoto for the world premiere as a deliberate homecoming, staging the event at the Minamiza Theater, one of Japan's oldest kabuki venues. The theater was decorated with character artwork, a giant Luma balloon, and a blue "Galaxy Carpet" in place of the traditional red carpet. Producer and Nintendo designer Shigeru Miyamoto attended alongside the full cast. The carpet walk and stage greeting were broadcast live through Nintendo's smart-device app, Nintendo Today!, reaching fans worldwide.

What to Expect | The US Rollout

The film adapts the setting of the beloved 2007 Wii game, sending Mario into space to rescue Princess Peach from Bowser's galaxy-spanning fortress. Early reactions out of Kyoto have been positive, with particular praise for Rosalina, the Observatory's guardian, who plays a significant role in the story. The original Super Mario Bros. Movie grossed over $1.3 billion globally, making Wednesday's US opening one of the most anticipated animated releases of 2026. Nintendo has not confirmed a sequel slate, but Donkey Kong Bananza is already in the pipeline as the franchise's next major title.
